Alopecia is defined as a hair loss disease that effects men, women and children. The onset of hair loss is often sudden, random and frequently recurrent.

Types-

1.Alopecia Areata :

Describes baldness in only one spot. It may occur anywhere on the head.

Alopecia areata is a form of hair loss from areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Because it causes bald spots on the head, especially in the first stages, it is sometimes called spot baldness.

Alopecia areata multilocularis refers to multiple areas of hair loss.

2.Alopecia Totalis : 

If the patient loses all the hair on his/her scalp, the disease is then called Alopecia areata totalis. 

3.Alopecia Universalis :

 
If all body hair, including public hair, is lost, the diagnosis then becomes Alopecia areata universalis.

4.Alopecia Barbae :

Loss of facial hair (for a man) especially in the beard area.

5.Alopecia Mucinosa :

A type of alopecia which results in scaly patches.

6.Androgenetic Alopecia :

Also known as male pattern baldness. It is a thinning of the hair to an almost transparent state, in both men or women. It is thought to be a hereditary form of hair loss.

7.Traction Alopecia :

Traction alopecia is usually due to excessive pulling or tension on hair shafts as a result of certain hair styles. It is seen more often in women, particularly those of East Indian and Afro-Caribbean origin. Hair loss depends on the way the hair is being pulled. Prolonged traction alopecia can stop new hair follicles developing and lead to permanent hair loss.

Alopecia can certainly be the cause of psychological stress. Because hair loss can lead to significant appearance changes, individuals may experience social phobia, anxiety, and depression.

In severe cases where the chance of hair regrowth is slim, homoeopathy provides good results and deals with the psychosocial issues. There is currently little provision for psychological treatment for people afflicted with alopecia in modern medicines.

Remedies-

Alopecia is a deep rooted illness, so a deep acting constitutional remedy is required to cure the patient. These medicines should not be used to self medicate as the disease require close monitoring by a homeopathic physician.

1. Acid-flouricum :

Especially adapted to chronic diseases with syphilitic and mercurial history. Mainly adapted to people who are Indifferent towards loved ones and they are unable to realize their responsibility towards everyone; buoyancy. Mentally they are elated and gay. Mainly indicated for Alopecia and hair loss. These people have very superficial relationships with everyone.

 

2. Phosphorus :

Bald spots on the head, which are dry and scaly, are characteristic of Phosphorus. Dandruff, roots of hair get gray and the hair comes out in bunches. Graphites cures bald spots on the sides of the head. The head sweats easily. The most important remedy in alopecia areata.

 3. Natrum Muriaticum :

Has the symptoms of easy falling out of the hair; it falls out when touched or combed. This is quite frequently seen in nursing home. Carbo vegetabilis has falling of hair after parturition or severe illness. Sepia has losing of hair after chronic headaches. 

4. Aurum metallicum :

A melancholic, low spirited condition should be present with this remedy. Worry, depression, or anger may occur, especially when these people feel they have made a mistake or failed in some way. A general tendency to feel worse at night and a strong desire for alcohol, sweets, bread, and pastries are other indications for Aurum. 

5. Phosphoric acid :
Falling of hair from general debility. Fluoric acid. Falling of hair from syphilis. As near specific as is possible. Arsenicum. Bald spots near the forehead; the scalp is covered with dry scales. Vinca minor. Falling of the hair with great itching of the scalp. 

6. Lycopodium :

This drug is frequently prescribed for complaint of alopecia. Mainly indicated in nervous and angry disposition. They are usually harsh on inferiors and express all their anger in home and are well outside. They usually have digestion problems with other complaints. All the complaints are better by warm applications. In skin complaints the discharges are offensive.
