Alternative and Holistic Health Careers are Thriving
Alternative medicine is rapidly becoming part of mainstream American health care. Patients are turning to a wide range of disciplines like acupuncture, iridology, herbal medicine, naturopathy, chiropractic treatment, massage, aromatherapy, homeopathy, and holistic nutrition to discover the underlying causes of illness and disease.
Alternative and holistic health practitioners treat entire energy, blood, and neurological systems in order to allow the body to heal chronic conditions and prevent illnesses.
Degree programs in alternative medicine may combine Western and Eastern medicines, offering courses in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and biochemistry, alongside training in Chinese herbs, body points and meridians, and energy systems. Naturopathic healers may use flower remedies, homeopathic and herbal tinctures or pills, as well as dietary counseling and supplements. Acupuncturists and massage therapists depend on knowledge of chi and anatomy to promote healing of internal organs, the skin, and muscles.
Wide-ranging Disciplines and Holistic Career Training
Depending on your specialization, your career training may take as little as a year or upwards of four years. Massage therapy schools offer instruction in a broad range of modalities, which can include Swedish, Shiatsu, craniosacral, sports, acupressure, trigger point, Hawaiian, or deep tissue massage. Each state has its own licensing requirements for massage therapists.
Formal training programs can lead to Bachelor of Science degrees in Holistic Nutrition, Natural Health, and Natural Health Studies. Grad programs offer Masters of Science degrees in Holistic Wellness, Natural Health, and Holistic Nutrition. Post-graduate training programs can lead to a Doctor of Naturopathy, Doctor of Natural Health, or a Doctor of Philosophy in Holistic Nutrition degree.
Herbology graduates often have their own practice, or consult with acupuncturists, doctors, chiropractors, and dentists. Students take nutrition as well as holistic medical courses to learn about herbs that balance body systems to promote natural healing and overcome systemic weaknesses.
Aromatherapy grads study the more than 60 essential oils that can be combined in creams, ointments, lotions, bath gels, compresses, and massage oils to produce healing effects on the body and mind. Their oils are used as inhalants or applied directly to the skin and can help treat a number of stress-related conditions.
Putting Your Degree to Work
Grads from alternative medicine programs will join the rapidly expanding healthcare industry, which is predicted to increase 27 percent through 2014, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Practitioners will take positions in clinics, private offices, nursing homes, health agencies, spas, resorts, counseling centers, and hospitals that employ alternative health professionals. Some work in concert with other holistic professionals (for example, a massage therapist may work with a chiropractor).
Holistic practitioners also augment their income by offering clinics, seminars, and training programs for their clients or other professionals.
Massage therapists are among the fastest-growing career groups in alternative medicine, with a 20 percent increase in jobs predicted through 2016. Earnings for all holistic and alternative practitioners vary by training, experience, and geographic location of their practice. Massage therapists earned a median 2007 wage of $34,870, with top earners taking home more than $70,000.

Billy’s Halo: Love, Science and My Father’s Death $1.97 Science is just one way of looking at life. As a neuroscientist working at the forefront of medical research, it is Ruth McKernan’s way. For a while it was her father Billy’s way, too. Indeed, science was a language they shared–until Billy inexplicably lapsed into a coma after being admitted to the hospital. As Ruth watches her father’s life ebbing away, she struggles to understand what is happening, grasping for control of the scientific knowledge that would allow her to objectify and analyze his medical condition. A postman’s son who parlayed his formidable intellect and natural strength of character into a successful career, Billy was always a difficult and demanding father. But it took his collapse and slow slide toward death for Rut to realize how intense her feelings were for him. Ruth recounts the story of Billy’s last year while exploring a collection of cutting-edge scientific themes–delving into memory, consciousness, microbes, and stem cells–gracefully linking them together like pearls strung upon the thread of her father’s life. A true labor of love, Billy’s Halo shines with heartfelt emotion, yet manages to provide a crystal-clear explanation of the way our brains and bodies work in sickness and in health. |

Living Long & Loving It: Achieving a Healthy and Active Lifestyle $11.99 Stereotypes about the elderly are so prevalent that elders themselves often buy into them. People young and old assume that retirement is a time of inactivity, less social involvement, and inevitable physical decline. For over nine decades Dr. Irvin M. Korr was a living refutation of that dreary stereotype. Through a holistic approach to health, based on the principles of osteopathic medicine, he proved that healthy, vigorous, fulfilling old age and long life are the natural culmination of healthy living. In his eighties, Dr. Korr was regularly playing tennis and cross-county skiing, while continuing his career as a medical educator, researcher, author, and lecturer. In this inspiring guide to achieving a healthy lifestyle at any time of life, Dr. Korr explains with enthusiasm and great clarity how any reader can apply scientifically based osteopathic principles to improve quality of life and promote successful aging. Among the principles he stresses is that the human body incorporates its own healing and defensive systems, as well as a health maintenance system. Together they form an indwelling healthcare system that is the ultimate source of health and for which each individual must take primary responsibility. By learning to develop healthy habits, we take care of the “physician within” to ensure that our inner physician can then take care of us. Dr. Korr also emphasizes the importance of regular exercise and the beneficial effects that freedom of motion and physical activity bring, not only on our musculoskeletal system but also for our various internal organs, as well as our state of mind. He recommends stretching exercises such as Yoga and whatever workout routine an individual finds enjoyable, from walking to jogging, swimming, and bicycling. Finally, he makes the point that healthy aging is a choice that anyone can make at any time of life by making beneficial lifestyle changes.Irvin M. Korr, PhD (1909-2004), was widely known and regarded for |

Living in the Moment: A Prescription for the Soul $23.95 Anecdotal and reflective, Living in the Moment comprises health expert Dr. Gary Null’s lifetime of observation and wisdom. Following Einstein’s belief that “we can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them,” Null offers fresh, paradigm-breaking solutions to living our life to its fullest potential—through our relationships, health, and self-expression. Dr. Null’s “prescription for the soul” bids readers to take an active role in their own lives—to carefully distinguish truth from past conditioning. While he espouses a natural-foods and alternative-health lifestyle as part of our well-being, Null also shows us how crucial it is to do those things with the right awareness and intention; if we go to yoga and eat right but stress out at work and are stuck in a difficult relationship, we’re not in balance and able to truly awaken to our deepest energy for life. Dr. Null has presented much of the material in Living in the Moment throughout his career—in his lectures, his award-winning radio show, documentary films, and investigative reporting. Now Living in the Moment enlightens readers on the many tools at their disposal for achieving the balance, self-esteem, and passion missing from their lives. |

Pioneer Spirit: Catherine Spalding, Sister of Charity of Nazareth $45 Mother Catherine Spalding (1793-1858) was the cofounder and first leader of one of the most significant American religious communities for women-the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth near Bardstown, Kentucky. Elected at age nineteen to lead the order, Spalding also founded several educational institutions, Louisville’s first private hospital, and the first social service agency for children in Kentucky. Pioneer Spirit is the first biography of Catherine Spalding, a woman who made it her life’s work to serve the citizens of the Kentucky frontier. Catherine, who lost her mother at a young age and was raised in many different homes before she was ten years old, eventually came to be raised in a colony of Catholic families. These formative years taught her independence, the value of hard work and an enduring spirit, and the importance of education, all of which would figure prominently in her later career. Spalding became increasingly interested in health care, services for orphans, and education, and her business skills and strong sense of purpose allowed her to achieve her goals with little interference from outsiders. She showed a natural gift for administration, and the scope and services of the Sisters of Charity expanded under her leadership. In the midst of this ministerial work, however, Spalding always maintained the connection of her ministry to spiritual and communal life, ascribing great importance to all three facets of her calling. Author Mary Ellen Doyle notes that in Spalding’s correspondence with the Sisters, she repeatedly emphasized the heart of charity: “genuine interest in each other and sisterly affection free of personal ambition or jealousy.” By the time ofCatherine Spalding’s death, the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth extended beyond Nazareth to more than one hundred sisters in sixteen convents. Spalding’s legacy of service continues today with more than six hundred members worldwide, and her story of progressive and compassionate leadership |

Practical Psychiatric Epidemiology $79.95 Epidemiology is a practical discipline involving the systematic study of health, disease and human behavior in the natural world. It aims to describe the extent and pattern of a problem; who, when and where people become ill, and then to explain these observations; why people become ill? This Practical Handbook of Psychiatric Epidemiology provides a general introduction to epidemiological techniques for psychiatric research. As demand grows for evidence based practice in psychiatry, there is increasing use of epidemiological methods for studies into causes, prognosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders; however, working in the field of mental health throws up its own particular challenges. This book explains how to adapt the tried and tested methods used in generic epidemiology to the special circumstances of psychiatric epidemiology. The result is a comprehensive introduction to the field, accessible to clinicians, in practice and in training, as well as those embarking on a career in mental health research. It will also be of interest to those from outside the sphere of mental health, interested in the special methodological difficulties encountered. |

The Art of Everyday Ecstasy $1.99 "Ecstasy is about waking up and finding that you are in love with life."Most people think of ecstasy in terms of sexual ecstasy, which Tantric sex expert Margot Anand wrote about in her bestselling The Art of Sexual Ecstasy.  Now, in The Art of Everyday Ecstasy, Anand expands our definition of ecstasy and shows how we can harness its energy to help us live, work, and love more passionately, joyfully, and with true spiritual focus.  Our modern, work-obsessed, stress-filled culture—what Anand calls the "anti-ecstatic conspiracy"—has dulled our spirits, thrown us off balance, and alienated us from meaningful everyday experiences.  In this inspirational journey toward finding the healing nature of ecstasy, Anand explains how the two types of ecstatic experiences—the moments of epiphany called Ecstatic Awakenings, and EveryDay Ecstasy, or the Ecstasy of Flow, a connection to our power and inner wisdom—can help us move beyond pain and doubt to reach our highest potential.Based on the spiritual path of Tantra, Anand shows how to use the natural energy system of our bodies—the seven chakras—as a map to ecstasy.  As she guides us through the chakras, she explains how each one plays an important role in transforming energy into erotic passion, healing, empowerment, compassion, creativity, insight, and gratitude.  Blocked chakras manifest themselves in surprising ways; wholeness can be achieved  only when all of the chakras are open with energy flowing freely.  By transforming negative behavioral patterns into positive ones and strengthening ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually, we can improve our health, sex life, career, relationships, and find profound meaning in everyday moments. With personal anecdotes, exercises, meditations, and rituals, The Art of Everyday Ecstasy shows us how to bring ecstatic energy |

The Closet of Sir Kenelm Digby Opened (1669) $17.02 A paperback edition of a classic of 17th-century English writing about food and drink. There is perhaps none more frequently quoted than this, no title more familiar. Its reappearance, therefore, will be very welcome to both the academic market, and the general reader. Digby was a European figure of some renown in scientific, philosophical and mathematical circles (besides being a military man, a pirate and a womaniser). This recipe collection made by him (in line with similar collections made by male enthusiasts and intellectuals of the time, for example the diarist John Evelyn) was published after his death by his former assistant George Hartman. It is perhaps the most literate of such cookery books. Digby was a natural writer, as entertaining as instructive. Many of the recipes are for drinks, particularly of meads or metheglins, but the culinary material provides a remarkable conspectus of accepted practice among court circles in Restoration England, with extra details supplied from Digby’s European travels. The editors also include the inventory of Digby’s own kitchen in his London house, discovered amongst papers now deposited in the British Library, and they have provided a few modern interpretations of Digby’s recipes. The work was last printed in 1910, in a sound edition that is no longer easily available. This new version has several improvements. The editors discuss the role of George Hartman in the compilation of the book, and relate its contents to the work that appeared in 1682 under Hartman’s own name, The True Preserver and Restorer of Health. There is a full glossary and the reader will be helped by the extensive biographical notes about people named in the text as the source of recipes. Sir Kenelm Digby (1611-1665) was born of gentry stock, but his family’s adherence to Roman Catholicism coloured his career. His father, Sir Everard, was executed in 1606 for his part in the Gunpowder Plot. Digby went to Gloucester Hall, Oxford, in 1618. He spent |

The Grief Club: The Secret to Getting through All Kinds of Change $14.95 How to move on after a major loss, such as the death of a loved one, the end of a career, or a health crisis. After author Melody Beattie’s son died, she found herself welcomed into new “club,” a circle of people who had lived through the tragic loss of a child. This was not the first club in which she unwittingly found herself. Years earlier she found herself in Twelve Step groups, first balking, then later embracing the healing principles that she now credits with saving her life. But life, Ms. Beattie writes, is all about change. Not only do loved ones die, but once successful careers can careen out of control and debilitating diseases can rob you of future plans. Smaller losses can take a toll as well. The natural process of aging leaves many people with a depleted sense of worth, and staying abreast with current technologies leaves many people feeling ill-informed and inadequate. She writes, “There’s a secret to get through loss, pain and grief. If we’re alone we can’t see who we are. When we join the club, other people become the mirror. Through them, we see ourselves and gain an understanding of what we’re going through. Then slowly, real slowly, we learn to accept who we see in the mirror. Then you become the mirror for them; by being honest about who you are, you’ll help them learn to love and accept themselves.” |

The Healthcare Dragon: Health Care in the U. S. , How it Was, How it Is, and How it Should Be $8.95 John Benjamin Wofford, M.D.—”Dr. Ben”—grew up in rural Arkansas during the depression of the 1930s, worked in small-town newspaper offices, served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theater during the final year of World War II and then the Korean War. After the war, he went to college on the G.I. Bill, then to the University of Tennessee College of Medicine at Memphis—this last undertaking financed with part-time jobs, loans, and scholarships.A third of Dr. Wofford’s professional career was spent as an Emergency Medicine specialist, the rest as a family practitioner. He retired in 1990, stayed home one week, and then returned to part-time emergency room work. He retired again in 1994, stayed home a month, then returned to family practice. He retired a third time in 2001 and stayed home a whole year. Troubled by the plight of the uninsured, he opened a small office over the H&W Drug Store in Newton, N.C., and called it The Clinic for People Without Health Insurance. As the saying goes, the rest is history.Aviation has been part of Wofford’s life from his early days in Arkansas. There was something fascinating about those old crop-dusters working the fields. One even crashed into a big oak tree near his home! (The pilot walked away, unscathed.) By 1946, he was at the controls of an airplane himself. In the course of a lifetime, Wofford has been a printer’s devil, a sailor, an aviator, and a doctor. That’s a pot from which stories boil continually. Printer’s ink having gotten into his blood early, it was only natural that a parallel career in writing should evolve. With three books published and deeply concerned about the uninsured, he wrote The Healthcare Dragon, hoping that something good would come of it. |

Thinking About Evolution $192.47 This is the second of two volumes published by Cambridge University Press in honor of Richard Lewontin. The first volume, Evolutionary Genetics from Molecules to Morphology, honors Lewontin’s more technical contributions to genetics and evolutionary biology. This second volume of essays honors the philosophical, historical, and political dimensions of his work. Given the range of Lewontin’s own contributions, it is fitting that the volume covers such a wide range of perspectives on modern biology. He was a very successful practitioner of evolutionary genetics, a rigorous critic of the practices of genetics and evolutionary biology, as well as an articulate analyst of the social, political, and economic contexts and consequences of genetic and evolutionary research. The volume contains an essay by Lewontin on Natural History and Formalism in Evolutionary Genetics, and an extended interview with Lewontin, covering the history of evolutionary genetics as seen from his perspective and exemplified by his career. The remaining chapters, contributed by former students, post-docs, colleagues, and collaborators, cover issues ranging from the history and conceptual foundations of evolutionary biology and genetics, to the implications of human genetic diversity, to the political economy of agriculture and public health. |

Vernichtungslager Treblinka $14.14 Kapitel: Franz Stangl, Kurt Franz, Aufstand Von Treblinka, Irmfried Eberl, Barry, Edek, Josef Hirtreiter, Franz Suchomel, Siegfried Graetschus, Gustav Münzberger, August Miete, Otto Horn, Willi Mentz, Heinrich Matthes, Albert Rum, Otto Stadie, Samuel Willenberg, Richard Glazar. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Franz Stangl (March 26, 1908 – June 28, 1971) was a commandant of the Sobibor and Treblinka extermination camps in the rank of SS-Obersturmführer. The son of a nightwatchman, Stangl was born in Altmünster, Austria. His relationship with his natural father was not a good one; he was so deeply frightened by him that he developed a hatred for his dragoon uniform. Stangl claimed his father died of malnutrition in 1916. To help support his family Stangl learned to play the zither and earned money giving zither lessons. In his teens he secured an apprenticeship as a weaver, qualfiying as a master weaver by the age of 23. Concerned that this trade offered few opportunities for advancement – and having observed the poor health of his co-workers – Stangl sought a new career. He was accepted into the Austrian police force, suggesting later that he liked the security and cleanliness that the uniforms represented to him. He became a member of the illegal NSDAP in 1931. Stangl later denied that he had been a Nazi in 1931, suggesting that he had only been listed as a member of the party as a way to avoid arrest after the Germans had seized power in the Anschluss in 1938. Records suggest that Stangl contributed to a Nazi aid fund at the time; but he said that he was misled as to the purpose of the fund. Stangl rose up the ranks of the German/Austrian police force, promotion which brought pressure on him to renounce his faith in the Catholic Church. The militarisation of the civilian police force saw new recruits loyal to the Nazi party advance while former civilian leaders were mistreated or arrested. In 1940, through a |

Where We Belong: Beyond Abstraction in Perceiving Nature $29.95 Gathered here in book form for the first time, the fourteen essays in Where We Belong exemplify Paul Shepard’s interdisciplinary approach to human interaction with the natural world. Drawn from Shepard’s entire career and presented chronologically, these pieces vary in setting from the Hudson River Valley to the American prairie to New Zealand. Equally impressive is Shepard’s spatial range, as he moves from subtle differences to grand designs, from the intimacy of an artist’s brushstroke to a vista of the harsh Greek terrain.Alluding to a range of sources from Star Trek to Marshall McLuhan to the Bible, the writings discuss such topics as the geomorphology of New England landscape paintings, beautification and conservation projects, the Oregon Trail, and tourism.Whether Shepard is pondering why the Great Plains conjured up sea imagery in its early observers, or how pioneers often resorted to architectural terms — temple, castle, bridge, tower — when naming the West’s natural formations, he exposes, and thus invites us to unshoulder, the cultural and historical baggage we bring to the physiological act of seeing. Throughout the book, Shepard seeks the antecedents of environmental perception and questions whether the paradigm we inherited should be superceded by one that leads us to a greater concern for the ecological health of the planet. This volume is an important addition to Shepard’s canon if only for the new view it offers of his intellectual development. More important, however, is that these selections demonstrate Shepard’s grasp of a wide range of ideas related to the physical environment, including the various factors — historical, aesthetic, and psychological — thathave shaped our attitudes toward the natural world and color the way we see it. |

Why Some Like It Hot: Food, Genes, and Cultural Diversity $25 Do your ears burn whenever you eat hot chile peppers? Does your face immediately flush when you drink alcohol? Does your stomach groan if you are exposed to raw milk or green fava beans? If so, you are probably among the one-third of the world’s human population that is sensitive to certain foods due to your genes’ interactions with them.Formerly misunderstood as “genetic disorders,” many of these sensitivities are now considered to be adaptations that our ancestors evolved in response to the dietary choices and diseases they faced over millennia in particular landscapes. They are liabilities only when we are “out of place,” on globalized diets depleted of certain chemicals that triggered adaptive responses in our ancestors. In Why Some Like It Hot, an award-winning natural historian takes us on a culinary odyssey to solve the puzzles posed by “the ghosts of evolution” hidden within every culture and its traditional cuisine. As we travel with Nabhan from Java and Bali to Crete and Sardinia, to Hawaii and Mexico, we learn how various ethnic cuisines formerly protected their traditional consumers from both infectious and nutrition-related diseases. We also bear witness to the tragic consequences of the loss of traditional foods, from adult-onset diabetes running rampant among 100 million indigenous peoples to the historic rise in heart disease among individuals of northern European descent. In this, the most insightful and far-reaching book of his career, Nabhan offers us a view of genes, diets, ethnicity, and place that will forever change the way we understand human health and cultural diversity. This book marks the dawning of evolutionary gastronomy in a way thatmay save and enrich millions of lives. |
